I read Larry James' blog everyday. Today's post is especially relevant to me. He quotes some statistics that mention and define hunger insecurity. I know for a fact that there are members of our fellowship who experience this phenomenon. There are many more beyond the walls of our fellowship, living in our local area. I am committed to pursuing a ministry in this realm. I am currently jockeying for a position from which I can initiate some outreach ministries. I hope to involve as many people as possible. Check out the post. Let me know what your thoughts are regarding such an outreach.

I am very interested in working with you in this area. My heart aches for the homeless, the hungry and orphans. I'm so excited about the opportunity to help. I never feel like I can do enough to help these people. I'm only one person but I'm determined to not let that stop me from being one person who is effective. ;)
Obviously this is a great need in our society. Unfortunately it is a need that is right under our noses. I'm not sure we realize how many are in need that we rub shoulders with everyday.
For some of my patients they rely on the Ohio Welfare system to provide their needs. I think this is an excellent option for many who may be going through rough times. Especially if used properly. I feel sorry for the children whose parents abuse the system. I see it all to often. They use their children for their advantage and their children's health is sacrificed. But along with the children, I get many complaints from elderly patients, on social security, who have to chose between food and their medicines. I can not tell you the guilt I feel knowing that the $70.00 drops that will keep them seeing longer may take food off their table. I have found companies that will help these people and I try to help where I can, but sometimes they don't qualify and the choices for these people start. Sight or Hunger? I love my job, but sometimes I think our healthcare system is messed up. Some other time.
I think you are on to something and I would support you in any way.
We should follow-up regarding the food drive. That might be a good place to start.
As Aaron's comment highlighted, working in this area is complicated. I appreciate the interest that has been expressed.
I think that a food drive would be great. Can or any kind of non-perishable goods. But Jason's statement that this is just a start is very important, because people hunger all year long. Please count me in on any help needed.
I would love to help out in any way that I can also. Since having my new job I have been into a lot of clinics and offices that have a high poverty level. I have seen children and elderly people that are malnourished and obviously go without. I also hear more often than not sitting talking to patients that they wish they could afford the medicines they need and they appreciate the samples that our company offers. Out of my territory around 65% of our sales come from Medicaid patients, which tells you what the poverty level is and that there is a lot we can do to help.
I'm thrilled to see so much interest. I need to speak to the Elders regarding a shifting of my responsibilities. If all goes well, by the new year I should be able to get started, not to discourage anything in the meantime (like what Dewey has cooking). I'll post more about it as things begin to develop.
