Purpose-Driven debate

I have mentioned a few times about being a part of a study group looking at The Purpose Driven Church. Today, I noticed a news link at KLOVE.com regarding a debate about the value of Rick Warren's model.

Here is a quote from Warren, from the article:

"When you're preaching and teaching the good news, you walk a very fine line where you're taking the world of the Bible and the world of today, and you're building a bridge between those [worlds]," he explained on Nightline. "Now, it's easy to be biblical if you don't care about being relevant … And it's easy to be relevant if you don't care about being biblical. I happen to want to be both."

The entire article can be found here.

I think 1 Timothy 4:15 says it all...
"I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His Kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things...."

Just one comment. I have not found biblical and irrelevant to be mutually exclusive or opposite poles on the spectrum. I am aiming at biblical AND relevant. I have read Rick's book(s). I think that what he has done is probably fine for the silcon valley and the kind of culture it represents. But I also know of a church here in southern Ohio wwhich has tried to implement Rick's model. It has been a total irrelevant disaster.
