Art appreciation

I am not naturally inclined to appreciate art. However, when I am helped along with understanding what it is that I am viewing or hearing, my interest grows quickly.

Most recently, I have found Richard Beck's discussion of "ugly" as a theological concept with his use of crucifixion art as illustration to be very interesting. It makes me want to look closer at religious art, and that's a big step for me.

Check out --> Experimental Theology

Scroll down to find recent posts featuring art, go back further to find discussions on Eastern Orthodox iconography. That too, is surprisingly interesting, to a guy like me.

I too, do not have a true appreciation for art (I would not know my Monet from my Picaso, without a road map), but I have to agree that those paintings evoke different emotions. It is amazing how the interpretations of the same event are so contrasting. I went from a smile to hardly able to look at the images in front of me. It reminded me of the first time I saw the movie the "The Passion" I was hardly able watch.

I feel a sense of humility when discussing the crucifixion or taking communion, but after seeing these pictures I can hardly look, not do to the graphic nature, but do to the overwhelming sense of humility, embarassement, whatever that emotion is when you have a pit in your stomach.

Thanks for the link.
