I think the main characteristic of the churches of christ has been tradition and claiming to be "the people of the word" but within the confines of what "our tradition had said", which hinders many from seeing what Paul was actually saying. In reality this view, is genuine first century church tradition, which is hard for people to see today because they have a difficult time stepping into the mindset of the 1st century writer - the true intent of God's word (for New Testament)
