A couple weeks ago, I was talking with Mike Anderson about one of his conversations with David Lewis years ago about some passages in John's Gospel and the reason for Jesus's miracles.
"Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." - John 6:29
"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life." - John 9:3
So essentially every initiative undertaken by Christians should have John 6:29 as it's objective. Jesus used miracles to achieve this. We are to use love. And this love isn't something I can drum up in myself...I have to get it from God.
"By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." -John 13:35

I have often contemplated the juxtaposition of the words "work" and "believe" in John 6:29. We do not typically think of believing as work, and to harmonize the two words by stating that belief leads to (action) work is missing the point, I think.
This passage is highlighted in my mind because David would often probe me about it. He loved to make us think about questions that have no clear answers.
