Rumor has it,that a couple of the Elders will be preaching over the next few weeks. The intent is to directly communicate to the congregation their vision of our future. I understand that my father, Don Coriell, will be preaching (or talking) this coming Sunday. Now, there is yet another thing I never thought I'd see.

One thing I hope to see continue is the willingness to think outside our typical sphere of religious behavior. We have tremendous opportunities to work with congregations around the county, especially in Minford and Portsmouth. We do not have to sponsor and totally manage every ministry with which we are involved. For instance, we have an opportunity to begin an involvement with Scioto Christian Ministries, Inc. They manage West End Day Care and the Homeless Shelter as well as some other activities. We could easily become a major player in these works. Of course, that is not standard operating procedure for an upstanding CofC. There are also opportunities to work together with congregations in Minford. I hope that we are able to be open to such possibilities.

With regard to the idea of building a new facility, an open mind is needed here as well. Currently a large majority of our congregation's yearly expenditures is inwardly focused. I would love to see the day that the majority of our funds are distributed to needs outside of ourselves. I personally think that is a tremendous indicator of a congregation's heart. The building of a major facility would definitely postpone such an achievement. The Saddleback Church (Rick Warren, Purpose-Driven fame) grew for 15 years to over 10,000 people before they built their building. Don't get me wrong, I am not against a new building, I am simply calling us to consider all possibilities.

What are your thoughts?

I think that it is wonderful that we get to hear directly from our elders what their vision is and in what direction that they intend to lead us.

I also believe that it is a wonderful thing to help other congregations that need what we can offer. I only hope in our zeal to be "excellent" to others, we don't miss helping the people in our own pews...the ones that never complain, but could really use our help. But the only way we will ever know about those folk's needs is if we spend some time with them. Galations 5:6b says, "The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love".

I feel that a new building will be needed in the future, but I believe that should be prayed over for a while and the funds be available BEFORE we begin construction. This will truly test our congregations "heart" and commitment to the project. The last building project started out with plenty of money coming in at first, but came to a screeching hault after a few short weeks. I'm not trying to be negative, and I know that if God wants us to have a new facility, we will. Maybe I just need a faith lift :).

I am very excited to see how God will decide to work at Sunshine in the next 10 years...I believe we are in for some very exciting times.

Our present building limits our potential for growth. Personally I think we should proceed as soon as the elders feel the time is right, and go for a BIG building, not just a slight increase in size. We expanded our auditorium just a short while back and we are already starting to get cramped again. As for the money, Sunshine has never hesitated to pony up the funds needed for anything they were asked for. If we wait until the time is "right," we may never get it started. More of my thoughts on this will be in this week's bulletin article :)
